5/6 Class
Welcome to the Year 5/6 Class page
Mr Goddard is our Y5/6 teacher. The upper juniors also have the added benefit of weekly specialist sports coaching.
Full details of our Summer term coverage can be found here.
Now that you are in Year 5 or Year 6 you need to be aware of the Age-Related Expectations (ARE). These are the knowledge and skills that the cohort must have in order to be able to accelerate their learning throughout the rest of the year. Look closely and work hard to ensure all of these objectives are achieved.

Year 5 and Year 6 Round Up
The start to the last term of this school year has been a busy one in Year 5 & 6, with lots going on both inside and outside of the classroom. Some great examples of our marvellous Meysey learning behaviours have been on display and the enthusiasm for learning new things has continued to be high.
As you know, last week saw the welcome return of Wellbeing Week. Just as in previous years, lots of fun and engaging activities were organised for the children with an emphasis on good physical and mental health, and the power of positive thinking. Children started the week by using some resources from the charity MIND. The children reflected on the things that they have in their lives that can support them in staying mentally fit and thought about their emotions during an emotion coaching session. The children were reminded that it’s always okay not to be okay, and that being aware of your own feelings is important.
Alongside this, there were also lots of activities that were designed to develop the children's understanding of the importance of physical health. As part of their regular P.E session on Thursday, Mr Miles ran a specific well-being session for the children where they gained a deeper understanding of the benefits of team sports. Towards the end of the week, we welcomed Kev who ran a Mini-Medics session. Please take time to look through the booklets that came home. The week ended with a trip on Friday to the Real Outdoor Experience at the lakes. During a fun packed day outside, teams worked together to design and build a raft which we raced to see who could get to the island first! We took on the Team Ropes Challenges - climbing Jacobs Ladder, trying to get to the top of the climbing tower and trying to build the highest crate state.
This week, following on from a prior session with PC Leah before half term, we were delighted to welcome her once again to talk to the us about how to have safe and appropriate online relationships. Having created a safe space where all opinions and ideas were welcome, PC Leah talked about the importance of using technology and devices in an age-appropriate manner. The children were reminded of whom they could talk if they experience anything online which makes them feel upset or unsafe.
In between all the activities of well-being week, maths arithmetic revision has very much been on the agenda, giving everybody the opportunity to secure previously learned topics. We have also continued our reading Secrets of a Sun King and are much better acquainted with the adventures of Lily and Tulip now. We have written a letter in role to their grandfather recounting the exciting journey as they travel to Egypt by train. Using a combination of formal and authentic language from the 1920s, it's been a real delight to see the impressive writing which has been produced - I am sure that the author, Emma Carroll, would be impressed.
And finally, and with mixed emotions, Year 6 travelled to Gloucester Cathedral earlier this week to take part in the annual Leavers’ Service. It was a great opportunity for everyone who attended to reflect not only on their time in year 6 but more broadly on their time at primary school. Singing a variety of songs, as well as trying to keep up with lots of complex dance moves, a great time in the beautiful cathedral was had by everyone. A special well done goes those children who carried candles, held the school banner and read beautifully in front of 500 people!
Once a quick picnic lunch had been enjoyed outside, we spent the rest of the afternoon in very different surroundings. 270 climbing was our choice of venue for the afternoon and what a place it was! Children took part in some very challenging and exciting climbing activities. It was impressive to see how many Meysey mountaineers we clearly have at school – well done! As the pictures on page 1 show, it wasn’t an afternoon for the faint hearted but all of the Year 6 children pushed themselves and had the best time! Thanks to Mrs Haines and Miss Lewis for organising!
